Letters From The Farm: Winter's Role

Dear World,

We have stepped into a new year - 2015 - leaving a busy one behind. From ongoing house restoration projects to new electrical service and water lines, I'd say the last twelve months have been pretty productive.

The goats are starting to show pregnant bellies, the pastures have continued to evolve, the gardens are being prepped for the spring, the chickens are foraging under fallen leaves. It's all part of the annual cycle that continues to breathe life into the farm.

Dear World, the frost covers our view every morning like nature's glitter and the sun comes and wipes it all away. The days are finally getting longer but colder; the woodstove is the heart of the house right now. It is the gathering place for meals, quiet evenings, listening to music, and playing games while we wait for spring. During the winter, it is a member of our family.

Winter is always a time for reflection and planning here while we wait for more daylight. We move and live by the seasons.

Dear World, it has been a good year. Things continue to grow and evolve and teach us, and there is no better gift than that. Sometimes you have to remind yourself to pay attention to the ebb and flow and work with it, not against it, and find the lesson in it. Other times it just comes natural.

Dear World, we celebrate our time here this year. I hope there is peace wherever you are.

Sincerely,

name
