It's only February and our egg production is great. Like all flocks, our hens started slowing down on their laying when the days started getting shorter. We decided that this year we wanted to start chicks earlier, which means we needed to get our hens laying more and breeding earlier than spring. To do this we put a single light on a timer in their henhouse that extends their "daylight". Within a few days, our egg production started going back up.

We are gearing up our hens so we can start egg collection for our incubator next week. We plan to collect all week off of the three hens we are breeding and start the incubator on Saturday. We're also letting a friend put some eggs from a breeder in, so hopefully in a few weeks we will have another good hatch weekend.

(P.S. Join the Barn Hop!)
